Bay Area father suggests surprising place for quiet driving lessons: Roadshow

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:31:39 GMT

Q: I taught my daughter to drive by going to a nearby cemetery. There are almost no other active cars there, and it is a good place to practice stops and starts, parking, backing up, tight turns, etc. Besides, it is highly unlikely you’re going to injure anyone, and no one complains about the noise.Norman Smith, Daly CityA: It certainly would have been a quiet place to learn to drive.Q: My husband, who is 90, has vision and balance problems. He recently renewed his driver’s license. He passed the written test, but when he was taking the visual part, he was struggling a bit, and the employee simply said it was OK and moved him along. When it came to the driving test, he also was excused from taking it.I was counting on the DMV to screen older people more closely, not less so. I would like to write a letter to the DMV, or whomever you might suggest should hear from me, and I wonder if you can give me some guidance about this.Joan SullivanA: Contact the DMV via the departmentR...

Why the independent Oakland Police Commission may be coming apart at the seams

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:31:39 GMT

OAKLAND — Once hailed as the city’s best option for holding police accountable, the volunteer-led Oakland Police Commission has become mired in dysfunction, with its soon-to-be former chair suggesting in a new lawsuit that she has been unfairly targeted by power-hungry external forces.A tangle of accusations has driven the independent commission — which holds the power to fire and help hire the Oakland police chief — into a political divide, with messy battle lines that have been further entrenched by recent events. With the chair’s ouster, and her lawsuit, new questions surround the commission at a crucial moment when it is leading the search for final candidates to replace former Chief LeRonne Armstrong, who was fired in February. The commission’s chair, Tyfahra Milele, likely will soon be out of her job after receiving zero votes late last week from a nine-member city panel that selects commissioners and decides whether to reappoint existing one...

EE.UU. y la OTAN se enfrentan a una escasez crítica de municiones para Ucrania

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:31:39 GMT

Aliyah Boston just wanted to fit in as a WNBA rookie. She has, and more. The first-time All Star’s historic season has made her the front-runner for rookie of the year honors and infused renewed hope for the Indiana Fever franchise. The organization’s league record-tying 20 game losing streak ended in May and Indiana already has matched last season’s victory total (five). Two more wins would give the Fever their highest single-season total since 2019. And maybe some second-half magic will finally put Indiana in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.With Boston, anything seems possible.“I knew she was special, but she’s exceeded it,” first-year coach Christy Sides said. “You just don’t know until you get into this league how you’re going to respond. It’s the different levels, size, speed, quickness, strength — she hadn’t faced that night in and night out. She takes everything in, she talks to every coach, she watches video with every...

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer was banned for 18 months on Tuesday for missing three out-of-competition doping tests in a 12-month period. The decision came from the Court of Arbitration for Sport after it partially upheld an appeal from the International Tennis Federation.“Having already been cleared once, and wholeheartedly standing by the fact that I do not feel that the third offense was committed, I find their decision to try me again and subsequently find me guilty, unfair,” Ymer wrote on Twitter. “On top of that, I find it difficult to comprehend that they found an 18-month suspension to be a just punishment.”Ymer, who also stressed that he has “never … used nor been accused of using banned substances,” was initially charged by the ITF in January 2022 after his third whereabouts violation, at a Challenger tournament in France the previous November. He accepted his first two whereabouts failures but argued that in the third instance he...
